Abstract

Within the European Union context, regulatory updates have been implemented to address current and future sustainability challenges. Concerning water sector, water utilities should make efforts to achieve universal and equitable access to drinking water and sanitation and to improve water quality globally (SDG #6). Stakeholder engagement is considered a crucial tool that water utilities should embrace to face the sustainability challenges proposed in the Agenda 2030. In light of the recent CSRD, the sustainability reports of the main water utilities in Europe have been analysed in order to examine the state of the art of the stakeholder engagement process implemented by them. In addition, the materiality assessment has been deepened and the choice and the priority of the material topics have been analysed. Finally, the main connections between stakeholder engagement process and materiality assessment have been underlined.
