This paper discusses the ethical implications of involving university students in non-clinical research activities, as addressed by the Ethical Committee for Research of the University of Brescia (CERA). Specifically, it examines vulnerabilities of students as research participants, emphasizing the risks of coercion and the potential influence of hierarchical academic relationships. It presents the Committee’s recommendations for mitigating such risks, including guidelines for recruitment, informed consent, regulation on incentives, and data protection. By establishing clear principles and operational tools, such as mediated recruitment systems and the exclusion of direct academic dependencies, CERA aims to foster ethical awareness and responsible conduct in non-clinical research across disciplines.
