The drafts of the new Eurocode 2 and the new fib Model Code 2020 are currently under final approval. They introduce significant changes on the design of anchorages and laps with respect to the current Eurocode 2 (EN1992:2004). This paper concerns the new design provisions for tensile anchorages and laps of ribbed reinforcement in Section 20 of the final draft of the forthcoming MC2020 as well as the background research which allowed these new provisions to be introduced. The paper presents also a comparison with the design rules in Section 11 of the final draft of the new Eurocode 2. The article evidences how the design rules have been modified with respect to the EN1992:2004 and their impact on the design of anchorage and laps length. An overview of the factors affecting anchorage and laps strength is also presented with a comparison among the current EN1992 and new draft of international standards. Finally, some open issues on the behaviour of anchorages are discussed, such as the urgent need of a new bond test representative of actual conditions in structural elements, the importance to limit the width of the ribs of indented rebars, and the effect of casting condition on the capacity of anchorages.
