In this article we provide the first evidences (obtained by several approaches) of a mitogenic activity exerted by urokinase plasminogen activator and t-PA in human skin fibroblasts in the absence of serum. In cultured cells uPA and tPA can behave as growth factors. Both uPA and tPA are serine-proteases, but they can exert different biological functions.
