Over the last few decades, the single-chamber parliamentary model seems to emerge in several democratic states as a trend in contemporary constitutionalism. A comparative survey of the salient features of unicameralism allows to assess reform proposals aimed at the transition from a pre-existing bicameral system to a unicameral system. In today’s pluralist democracies, such a reform needs an in-depth analysis of the implications of the choice regarding the fundamental parliamentary structure, its main functions and its ‘renewed’ representative vocation. In addition, a comparative analysis helps to identify the necessary correctives to prevent the predominance of the parliamentary majority in the single Chamber and safeguard the vital interests of minorities. Such a risk is aggravated by the growing cultural inhomogeneity of contemporary societies. In any democratic experience, the abandon of a bicameral model must take place in the awareness that Parliament, especially if unicameral, is called upon to give adequate institutional expression to the intercultural dimension of society

Abstract
In any democratic experience, the abandon of a bicameral model must take place in the awareness that Parliament, especially if unicameral, is called upon to give adequate institutional expression to the intercultural dimension of societyFile | Dimensione | Formato | |
