In the European Union, more than 2.5 billion tonnes of waste are produced every year. Faced with the environmental unsustainability of current production and consumption models, the paradigm of the circular economy is slowly emerging. Circular economy is based on sharing, reuse, repair, reconditioning and recycling of existing materials and products as long as possible. In the life cycle of assets, often little attention is paid to the phase of decommissiong even in the disposal of industrial plants and machinery. However, a careful management of the decommissioning phase could lead to significant economic and environmental benefits linked to the reuse of assets otherwise sent for disposal as waste (so-called circular decommissioning). The organizational and managerial complexities of decommissioning can lead companies to consider preferable, as highlighted in the case illustrated in this article, to involve specialized agents in the disposal of complex assets. The auction system, rarely used in Italy, can be an advantageous solution in terms of transparency, efficient management and economic results.
