The choice of the best heat treatment parameters is one of the most delicate issues in order to enhance the performance of aluminium alloys for casting. A further improvement in mechanical properties can be achieved through the addition of not conventional strengthening alloying elements. As both chemical composition and heat treatment parameters strongly affect the final properties of the material, it is fundamental to quantify the combined contribution of these factors. In the present paper, the optimization of mechanical properties of a non-conventional Al-Si-Mg alloy with Cr addition was investigated, according to chemical composition and heat treatment parameters. Design of experiment (DoE) and analysis of variance (ANOVA) methods were applied to determine the most suitable heat treatment parameters to enhance micro hardness. Furthermore, by comparing the behaviour of the alloy with or without Cr, this study provided useful information about the role of Cr during heat treatment in order to better evaluate its strengthening effect
