Removing the bacterial plaque: Effectiveness of the professional Procedures Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of three different procedures of oral hygiene treatment in removing the bacterial plaque. Materials and methods: The study included 31 patients (aged 18 to 35 years). All the subjects were in good general health and were not affected by periodontal disease. The sample selected was splitted into 3 groups with 3 different procedures: group 1 - iter A: treatment with ultrasonic instrumentation, hand instrumentation (scaler), polishing with a rubber cup and prophylaxis paste; group 2 - iter B: treatment with ultrasonic instrumentation, polishing with a rubber cup and prophylaxis paste; group 3 - iter C: treatment with hand instrumentation (scaler), polishing with a rubber cup, maniple and prophylaxis paste. Before every treatment (T0) and after each professional action (T1, T2, T3) the O’Leary Plaque Index (1972) was applied. Results: In all the groups the three procedures of professional hygiene allowed a meaningful reduction of the plaque index and the phase of the deplaquing has lead to a further important improvement and as such detected as indispensable phase. However, the most effective professional removal of bacterial plaque (p<1 per cent) seems the treatment A. Conclusions: Therefore, our data support, a procedure of professional oral hygiene effective and able a high “decontamination” at the oral cavity.
