The object of this paper is button manufacturing in Italy during the Early Modern Period. This topic is still little known, but it is an interesting one as it is, on one side, strongly connected with the guild system and the creation of precious objects, and, on the other, open to efforts to adjust local and traditional production to the taste and fashions which appeared on the European novelty market. The study illustrates the interdisciplinarity of Italian manufactures and then, through the analysis of some cases, deals at some length with product and process innovations which had been introduced in glass and metal alloy button manufacturing, during the Eighteenth century, mainly in the Northern regions of the peninsula.
