In this paper the problem of the local resistance of concrete around a stud connector or a bar acting as a dowel is studied. A specific test was carried out to simulate a real situation of a generic thin layer of concrete pierced through by the bar. The local concrete deformation produced by the pressure of a transversally loaded bar was analysed using the moiré technique. The experimental curve between the load and the transversal displacement of the bar shows a behaviour which could be idealized in an elastic-plastic relationship. The bearing capacity of the concrete turns out to be about five times the cylindrical strength.
