Renewable energy plays a central role in the net-zero economy transition, with solar energy being one of the most promising resources. The concentrated solar power (CSP) plants can integrate relatively low-cost thermal energy storage, which makes them flexible and enables dispatchable electricity generation up to 24 hours. This is increasingly important as the share of non-dispatchable renewable generation (such as photovoltaic plants with no or only short-term energy storage) in the power grid continues to grow. The competitiveness of the next-generation CSP plants can be enhanced through the adoption of advanced CO2 power cycles operating at higher turbine inlet temperatures. Considering the operation of CSP plants in hot and arid climates, power cycle operation in a supercritical state (sCO2) is expected. Further performance improvement can be achieved by utilizing CO2-based mixtures using dopants with high critical temperatures. This enables a transition from supercritical to transcritical cycles with compression in the liquid phase, allowing for both improved efficiency and lower cost of the power cycle and CSP plant. The thesis is structured as a collection of scientific papers organized into four parts. Part one focuses on the design and experimental characterization of equipment for sCO2 and CO2 mixture power cycles. The comparison of different commercial technologies available today for recuperators and primary heat exchangers is carried out. Then the similarity between water and solar salt is explored to experimentally characterize the thermo-hydraulic performance of innovative heat exchanger design for primary heat exchanger applications. Finally, the equipment for sCO2, CO2 mixture, and steam Rankine power cycles is designed with mass, cost, and flexibility estimations performed. Part two investigates the novel dopants proposed in this work. New CO2 mixtures for CSP plants are proposed and evaluated through preliminary thermodynamic optimization of power cycle performance and techno-economic optimization of CSP plants. Thermal stability tests of C3F6 and GeCl4 were carried out, showing low thermal stability limits of both fluids. Part three evaluates the techno-economic performance of sCO2 and CO2 mixture power cycles in CSP plants. The use of sCO2 and CO2 + SiCl4 mixture power cycles in Gen2 and Gen3 CSP plants is assessed for different cycle layouts, solar multiples, and thermal energy storage capacities. Additionally, off-design modeling of supercritical and transcritical simple recuperated cycles is conducted to assess the influence of air-cooled heat rejection unit design on the overall techno-economic performance of CSP plants. Part four presents a high-temperature combined cycle configuration for CSP applications. The combined cycle consisting of the topping alkali metal cycle and bottoming sCO2 recompression power cycle is proposed and compared with a standalone sCO2 recompression cycle. In summary, this thesis presents theoretical and experimental investigations of equipment, novel dopants, and the techno-economic performance of CSP plants using sCO2 and CO2 mixture power cycles, as well as high-temperature combined cycle configuration for CSP. The findings contribute to both industry and academia by providing a valuable basis for the design of next-generation CSP plants with sCO2 and CO2 mixture power cycles.
