The objective of this paper is to analyze the suitability of video technology as a means to improve safety at work in manufacturing companies. A literature review is performed in order to find examples of the use of video data for safety reasons and identify possible advantages and risks connected to the use of video recording or real-time monitoring in the workplace. The need of integration of video technology with other tools, like performance measurement systems, is assessed and a safety performance measurement system, focusing on safe behaviours and conditions monitoring, is developed. The measurement system is intended to support video analysis, data recording and safety performance assessment. A preliminary framework for the use of video technology and performance measurement for safety reasons is proposed to support companies in identifying and correcting unsafe behaviours or conditions, thus fostering the process of continuous improvement of their safety performance.
