Recent advances in the field of machine-learning have contributed to the development of artificial intelligence systems (AI) that have been pervasive in various areas of industry and business. Largely driven by the deep-learning revolution, the current wave of interest in AI continues to evolve rapidly, spurred by an exponential growth in data and computing power but most important by massive private investments. Sectors such as medical, finance, transport etc. but also tailor-made products and costumer services have benefited from the application of deep learning to very specific practical problems. Machine intelligence can be used mainly to (i.) enable autonomous systems or (ii.) as tools to aid human decision-making and mission-command. Brief considerations on the current debate on the militarisation of AI, also focusing on security issues, is prpvided.
