The diffusion of the brake-shoe system led to the request to study brake-wheel-rail interaction. This study aims to deepen this topic with an innovative small-scale test rig, called "4-contact machine". Suited test procedures were designed. The wheel material used is ER7 type steel and was coupled with R260 rail steel and three different brake-shoe materials (cast iron, composite and sintered). The results showed that the 4-contact machine reproduces the effects of wheel-rail-brake shoe contact and damages similar to those observed on a railway wheel at the end of its life can be obtained.

Abstract
The diffusion of the brake-shoe system led to the request to study brake-wheel-rail interaction. This study aims to deepen this topic with an innovative small-scale test rig, called "4-contact machine". Suited test procedures were designed. The wheel material used is ER7 type steel and was coupled with R260 rail steel and three different brake-shoe materials (cast iron, composite and sintered). The results showed that the 4-contact machine reproduces the effects of wheel-rail-brake shoe contact and damages similar to those observed on a railway wheel at the end of its life can be obtained.File in questo prodotto:
