While revisiting some of the most influential studies on English oral language of the past, the Author re-evaluates the importance of intonation, as one of the main components of delivery. The ideas presented in the volume have both influenced - and been influenced by - the results of a PhD thesis on English Intonation (1996), and by some debates within the Rhetoric Society of America (2000). The most recent intonational theories are discussed here.
