The implementation of ISO 14000 certification in a company involves a set of costs and benefits that are very important to be known for the effective evaluation of the investment in environmental quality, even if some difficulties arise in their calculation, as it will be discussed, mainly because of the absence of reference data or specific assessment criteria and of the small number of companies that already implemented an Environmental Management System. A first and approximate estimate of these costs and benefits has been obtained with respect to some real industrial cases, mainly in the chemical field, and the survey results are given in this paper. The research was carried out in Italy with reference to some industries that implemented an Environmental Management System, mainly in accordance with ISO 14000.

Abstract
The implementation of ISO 14000 certification in a company involves a set of costs and benefits that are very important to be known for the effective evaluation of the investment in environmental quality, even if some difficulties arise in their calculation, as it will be discussed, mainly because of the absence of reference data or specific assessment criteria and of the small number of companies that already implemented an Environmental Management System. A first and approximate estimate of these costs and benefits has been obtained with respect to some real industrial cases, mainly in the chemical field, and the survey results are given in this paper. The research was carried out in Italy with reference to some industries that implemented an Environmental Management System, mainly in accordance with ISO 14000.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
