Bond and anchorage are the terms used to denote the interaction and transfer of force between reinforcement and concrete. Bond influences behaviour of concrete structures in many ways, no matter whether the reinforc-ing material is steel, an FRP composite, fibres forming a constituent of the concrete mix, or whether it is em-bedded or external to the concrete section. These parameters are highly complex, however, and are technically difficult to measure directly. Results of tests designed to measure the fundamentals of bond behaviour are not always easy to interpret and apply to practice. While many advances have been achieved, there remain areas where much better understanding of bond and its mechanisms are required, and where further work is required to incorporate this understanding into safe and economic rules to guide construction. These aspects are widely discussed within the scientific and practitioner community, particularly in special occasions as represented by the International Conferences on ‘Bond in Concrete’ held every 10 years since 1982: 1982 Paisley, Scotland; 1992 Riga, Latvia; 2002 Budapest, Hungary.The fourth Conference in this sequence is held in Brescia, Italy from June 17th to June 20th 2012. The principal aim of the 4th Bond in Concrete conference is to bring together researchers and practitioners and review the advances in understanding and application of all aspects of bond in concrete achieved over the last decade, and to help identify the challenges and priorities to be addressed in the next. In Brescia in 2012 the timing is of particular significance as the Conference closely follows the publication of fib’s Model Code 2010, which contains a number of significant innovations and improvements in design guidance related to bond. A major theme in the 2012 Conference will be the intimate links and interaction be-tween detailing practice and bond. GENERAL ASPECT OF BOND is the volume 1 of the Proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Bond in Concrete (Brescia, Italy 17th-20th June 2012). It is divided in six chapters: 1) General aspect of bond; 2) Modelling; 3) Anchorages and Laps; 4) Transfer and Development; 5) Assessment of Degradation; 6) Bonded and Headed Anchors. It contains also the keynote lectures of the conference.
